Tips and How-To’s As one of the oldest and most widely recognized brands in music, Gibson has crafted some of the most cherished and valuable instruments of all time. Determining exactly when your Gibson specimen was made can have high stakes attached to it. A difference of only one year – sometimes even several months – can mean a four-figure difference in value.
Stop tailpiece now chrome plated too, and replaced on many models like the ES with a trapeze tailpiece.
But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows.
The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years.
To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine. For the most part, it looks real. But there are some obvious indicators—if it starts with a five, for instance.

His black satin coat shimmers in the flickering firelight.
The year is about as close as your going to get. Gibson’s in the ‘s, especially early ‘s, are excellent guitars. That changed in the early ‘s when Gibson went to straight bracing. I’m probably wrong, but was under the impression that change occured after Not that the change in bracing meant a bad guitar, it’s just somewhat different than the earlier models. As the 50’s wore on, Gibson continued to make changes, including heavier bracing, thicker tops, adjustable bridge, and so on, until by the early ‘s the J was a different guitar.
For me, the cutoff date for vintage Gibson dreads is usually I say usually, because I recently played a friends early ‘s J and loved it, so I may have to get over my vintage snobbery.
